Street and market
Is a street a proto-mall? A street is a proto-market, but a market is not a mall. A market is more open, a public space. Even enclosed and branded, like the Public Market in Portland, or European market buildings, a market is not yet a decorated destination mall. Economically there may not be much difference: rented space. But it makes a difference that in the mall the stores are more separated than the stalls in a market hall. The norms of behavior are different.
