Behavioral differences between malls and markets
Malls segregate. In a mall corridor you are pulled by the neon and the logos, but once you enter a store, its branded decorations and atmosphere enclose you. Markets, on the other hand, thrive on interpenetration and loitering. You are with this vendor and the others are pulling at you visually and with sounds and smells. In markets space is more alive. There are more turnings and motions on the scale of the human body. Malls have fixed topologies, whereas in markets movement is flexible; you can take short-cuts; the map changes. The net versus the line. Street market spaces and twistings encourage interaction with and among the vendors. Mall salespeople stare out of their glitzy bureaucratic cages with only one function. In a market, when there are no customers, the vendors chat with one another. Then, while I bargain with one, another makes comments.
