We are told that to avoid having tourism debase local communities, we should "create a separate space, both psychologically and physically, where local communities can nourish their own myths and social lives" Lippard 1999, 61, quoting Chris Wilson

This sounds at first like a good idea, though we might wonder to what extent it is possible in today's world. What kind of dualities and intrusions can't be avoided?

But on a deeper level this recommendation is puzzling. It sounds opposed to what many of the same critics urge as multicultural urbanity. Does it sound like a recommendation for the kind of suburban life that they also attack?
