Tivoli conversation

Viewing one place grammar from within another is not always a hierarchical or one-way process. The native can recontextualize the tourist even as the tourist does the native.

Such mutual viewing and mutual incorporation makes up much of what critics find appealing about city life.

Many discussions of tourism emphasize the universality of the touristic stance. But that universality is not a hierarchical superiority. There is no permanent meta-platform available for either side.
