Bowling abroad
There are many different relationships lumped under the word 'tourism.' The American woman that my wife heard complain about the lack of bowling alleys at Angkor Wat was not relating to the place in the same way as as the dedicated German tourist combing the ruins, guidebook in hand, nor are either of them the same as a rich son of a English stately home making the grand tour of Europe, or his great-grandmother as a Victorian lady traveller, or the German writers who came to Italy and were changed. Was Goethe a tourist on his Italian journey? He did many of the same activities as today's tourists, but his overall form of life was different.
