Reston at 30

Map of a plaza at Reston

Thirty years old now, Reston spreads over a large area, and the more recent sections lack the sensitive planning of the earlier. It is about twenty miles from Washington but has become part of its own Edge City, with high tech offices, big shopping, a large hotel, and Dulles Airport nearby. I was impressed by the older sections; they have many kinds of housing and a natural feel. They are not quite walkable in the way that New Urbanism would want, but they are compact, on a wooded and varied terrain.
