As children do

Our house in Garden City, in the early 19950s

As children do I took my environment for granted. I never felt that I was surrounded by like-minded people, since a town, no matter how homogeneous, generates its own internal differences, and besides those, we distinguished ourselves from New York City dwellers and from other suburbs. But the town really was homogeneous, and I didn't know about the real estate tactics used to discourage diversity. I did see, though, how the place fitted into the life stories of the people who had lived through the Depression and the War. It was a pleasant and active place to grow up. Being not far from Manhattan helped, too.
