We should beware the presupposition that true dwelling requires closed immersion in organic hierarchical places. We should also beware the opposite presupposition, that we must flee such places.
Place identity is not all or nothing; we don't have to choose between being rooted in the local Black Forest soil or being homeless wanderers in directionless voids. If we understand identity as within a linked process of reinterpretation, then we may find resources to deal with and enjoy the newer kinds of places, with their strange unities, and we may find resources that let us inhabit traditional places in new ways.
We can emphasize or add complexity, defy serialization and linearity, find or make links, and increase self-awareness. Philosophical reflections can help us in this task.
