Self-conscious logos

For Hegel we are capable of detaching ourselves from any given meaning or norm and seeing it within a universal process that provides a rational structure of criteria that can be comprehended by pure thought. Historically given patterns of community life contain elements of such rationality, which work within them to move toward a freer modern state. In that process, which is not necessarily directed consciously by us, both those structures and our subjectivity come to be defined in new ways, which more and more embody our freedom.

This is not adequate.
