One error of modernism was the presumption that an abstract necessary form for concrete ways of life itself provided a sufficient concrete way of life.
In architecture and planning this showed up as the confusion of necessary form with generalized life, giving the one the force of the other, thinking the one's lack of content and history applies to the other. So buildings could be designed and cities planned in disregard of history and context, since what really counted was the necessary functional skeleton. Everything else was contingent detail that the planners could ignore. It would not go away, but it would not be essential to any fundamental social meaning.
