MacCannel is wrong to say that genuine attractions must always appear as if they would continue to exist without the help of sightseers. (MacCannell 1989, 156)

This is not true of themed places, in which we are complicit in order to maintain the fantasy. It need not be true of tourist places. For critical inhabitation or critical tourism we should make that complicity explicit and enjoyed as such.
