When I first went to Japan, I spent a year in Nagoya, which is not too far from Kyoto and Ise. I had long been interested in Buddhism and had read about Zen, so I was prepared for Buddhism. I was not prepared for Shinto, which I found exciting because of its emphasis on nature and its refusal of universalism.
