Portiuncula Chapel surrounded by the larger Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels

Assisi may be the most touristically taken over of the hill towns. The Portiuncula chapel provides a striking image of tourism, as the ancient and simple little chapel rises from the rich marble floor of the huge surrounding basilica. This is, however, no modern objectification, but the traditional existence of a pilgrimage site. Read Chaucer, not MacCannell, for that real life.
