Stone foundation, Oxford

Stones and poles foundation, Katsura, Kyoto

  1. Foundations rest on rock
  2. but everything floats; deep down the earth's core is liquid
  3. circulations that go nowhere support rocks and foundations
  4. foundations dug too deep would melt
  5. if we made them deep enough foundations could rest on each other
  6. shared foundations become one system sharing circulations
  7. in shaky soil foundations can float, like dugout canoes, flexibility keeps the buldings afloat
  8. the building does not rest, on its foundation; it sways and strains
  9. without gravity we don't need foundations, but everywhere we need connections and flows
  10. you never know when the next big one will come along

Yet the metaphor persists, we feel unsure, exiled, and we want foundations.

Foundations and roots are not so different. Both are mobile.

Is it a metaphor?
