Cities: base and superstructure, Lake Point Tower, Chicago

It seems odd to speculate about the end of the historical city even as urban centers grow hugely all over the world. Yet where it is not sprawl, the large city of our future will not be Paris, or Greenwich Village, or even Los Angeles. It may be Sao Paulo, where economic control towers loom above shanty towns, with vast divisions between rich and poor. Even if those divisions were eventually healed, the result would still not be multiple Manhattans. Such cities would develop their own forms of sprawl, as is happening in Europe.
