The Campo in Siena, Italy

Even traditional spaces get dealt with in new ways as new modes of unity and connection come to dominate our lives.

Italian piazzas, for example, had traditionally depended for their social efficacy upon their central locations and ingrained conventions of showing up there at established times; now, Italians simply call one another [on mobile phones] and arrange meetings on the fly. Piazzas still look the same and still work superbly as public space, bur their patterns of use have become far more flexible. Mitchell2003, 157
