Unified character for each place?
Must the unity of the place involve a corresponding unity of its natural or built character? Some very effective social places -- temporary parliament quarters, for instance -- lack any unified aesthetic and spatial impact. Places in my sense do not need to have the feeling of a unified and centered locale. Whether or not a locale gives us a feeling of unity and at-home-ness is separate from what kind of social possibilities the place offers. Some spaces and locales that make us feel wonderful are not associated with social patterns for action. Others might be social places but their unified homey feeling might hide serious oppressions. Whether a place produces a feeling of appropriateness and completeness is quite a different issue from whether or not its grammar of action is complex, appropriate, humane, just, and so on.
