In situations where different regions of the city have few distinguishing characteristics choice will be impeded and intensity will be diminished. Today some collections of places lack distinguishing characters, while others scream their brash differences and so produce a second-level uniformity that is equally wearying.

The grammar of places and and the character of places do not imply one another, yet both need to be considered, even though we cannot take one as the definitive key for the other.
