Street in Seaside, Florida

Suburban New Urbanist communities combine some features of older towns with the linkage and multiplicity characteristic of today's porous, discontinuous places. Their newness can be hidden by the look of the place and by rhetoric about returning to a secure past, but residents quickly discover that they have not escaped, although may have altered, their insertion into today's network processes.

New Urbanist developments do become different kinds of local nodes than standard suburbs. While their community cannot really close in on itself, the New Urbanist developments do encourage new kinds of local interactions, in a physical environment that offers new stimuli and reminders.
