The Tepanec were the people of the city of Azcapotzalco, on the west shore of Lake Texcoco. According to the legendary histories of the Mexica, they were also wanderers, who entered the Valley of Mexico before the Mexica arrived there. The same histories said that the Mexica served the Tepanec as mercenaries until they overthrew them and established their own authority. Nigel Davies identifies Huitzilopochco, Tlacopan, and Coyoacan as other cities of the Tepanecs. He links the Tepanecs with the Otom as adherents of a god called Otontecuhtli.
