The people of the cities on the east side of the lake-- Texcoco, Coatlichan, Acolman and Huexotla-- were called the Acolhua. The assistance rendered by Mexica mercenaries to the Tepanecs in their war against the Acolhua is credited in the legendary histories with enhancing the status of the Mexica. According to Fernando de Alva Ixtlilxochitl, a descendant of Texcocan nobility writing about 1600 AD, the opening moves in the Tepanec war against Texcoco came in the form of demands for the Texcocans to weave cotton provided by the Tepanecs into mantas, the robes which were the traditional tribute payment made by defeated vassals.
