The Valley of Mexico surrounds modern Mexico City. Volcanoes rise around the valley, and their past eruptions sealed off the drainage that fed shallow, interconnected lakes. On the shores of these lakes, villages grew and it was here, in the southwest valley, that the city of Tenochtitlan was founded on islands.
