5-2   May 1999, Writer's Journal   2-5

The workshop is winding down and projects are nearing completion. I'm very pleased with the progress. I think we'll be ready in a week for the gallery showing of works. I am also excited about launching the "My" Millennium Project. Australian writer-artist mez will create the centerpiece.

Anita Cotic saw and liked "Rockgarden of Love" at the Amour-Horror gallery showing in Montreal. She'll interview me on a radio show called the XX FILES on CKUT 90.3 FM (www.ckut.ca) Monday night. I've been talking with Reiner about the Water project proposal. We have some ideas, which I'll send to Andrew Chetty of the Now Festival.

Creative Work: Much of this week, I worked on manipulating nude photos Donna Mitchell took of Jill Burton, vocalist and producer, for a performance art piece entitled "The Power and Beauty of Women." Some slides were projected onto Jill as she read a monologue on her midlife experiences. Also some work on my computer was relayed to a video camera and shown large. I'd like to make up several web pages inspired by this work with Jill to submit to the Aix-en-Provence Doc(k)s show. Here are scenes from the evening:

A fit and trim white pregnant woman doing African dancing--her belly very distended, her white midriff coming off one breast, toward the end before the climax, she threw off her top. She received the most applause for the evening. I think people are not used to seeing a pregnant woman vigorously dancing. Terrific!

A 72 year old woman named Gitana de la Luna, Moon Gypsy, 2 weeks after double hip replacement, gave a monologue on her life as an exotic dancer, followed by an arm dance in a chair, snaky liquid moves and then she stood and rolled her hips and shimmied. Another wow! She was good, too.

The show opened with tableaux and toning. We were in poses and then various dancers had spotlight cameos. The show opened with toning. Pretty dramatic to have people in poses singing not words but seeking the right vocal pitch/tone for the energy of the room. A little new age and a bit atonal but I liked it.

31-5   May 1999, Writer's Journal   5-31

This has been a particularly busy time at trAce. I have been creating the web pages for the trAce online Gallery showing. There is a program page, a bio page and also a list discussion on the topic "Is Hypertext Dead?". I hope anyone reading this journal visits the projects! I have begun a column called The Virtual AdviZer, which addresses questions dealing with web work/poetry.

The "My" Millennium project is now underway. I will curate/edit an online anthology that focuses on time and the digital revolution. I've received many query letters, which have surprised, delighted me. Submissions with an address and nothing else miff me. I have received a couple of intriguing ideas, one involving live audio, another from Mexico proposing a collaboration. One from Australia sounded promising.

Next Sunday, I'll travel to Midland, Michigan, to begin the Alden Dow Fellowship. While there, I'll create a web essay on The Recent History of Intertextuality and how that influences Web-Specific work. In early November, I'll fly to Nottingham to present at the Now 99 Festival. Upon my return from Michigan in mid-August, I'll devote my time to "Water, Water"—the Now Project.

Robert Kendall has asked me to be a guest in his online Hypertext Class at the New School. This will last a week and students will email me questions.

Creative Work: I have finished the project "Jill Swimming." I think I ended up with 10 pages and 7 Flash movies. Jill Burton wrote the text, Donna Mitchell photographed Jill. I decided not to send the piece to the Aix-en-Provence show. I couldn't understand if they were accepting everything or having a juried competition. I prefer the latter. Some other venue/opportunity will come along for that work. I may improve one or two of the Flash visions. I have learned more after studying the manual.
