CONVERGENCE AT LAST: When I was ten years old, my father gave me an old guitar and a scrap of blue blanket. These had belonged to my aunt, Nellie Clare. Nellie, in her heyday, alive, had played flamenco, read fortunes, and taken long bus trips into the nowhere desert to seduce strange men. The guitar and the scrap of wool were my familiars—for Nellie Clare became my spiritual guide, and she started me on the search for the Treasure of Califia . She has been my constant star. Although she was gone from her physical body before I was born, of all the gifts she gave me, the second sight of search is the one I have lived by....
Nellie
Clare knew the stories of the
Beveridge
generations—and she knew the
many times that Beveridge and Summerland children had come together to
discover the Treasure. When
I had gathered all of these, it was time to join the other threads of
the story, look for the cosmic pattern. I needed to persuade a Summerland to talk with
me about Califia. Jack
would not. Augusta will,
even though she doubts that her collection of documents has any
relationship to her current distress.
Since Augusta is concerned with the present,
she might want to begin with stories that hold immediate promise.
Even incentives like the very sleazebag from WindPower.
But this effort to put all the information together will reveal that no
part of the story is an isolated incident, all is a part of the whole.
With the addition of Augusta's archives, and with Calvin's help, I
believe that we will unearth forgotten relationships, restore the
connections, find the harmony beneath the fragments of song.
