I never knew her husband very well. He was usually busy with his work. Can't recall exactly what that was, something with a company in the city. I remember him as medium height and tending toward burly, not heavy, but kind of solidly packed, and with a distracted look on his bearded face. I saw him a few times at their house, a huge old Victorian mansion that they had renovated. It was utterly charming and so different from anything I had ever known in those days. Something of a doll's house to it, with lots of little rooms of ambiguous use, decorated intently with troves of art fair treasures that Kate had picked up over the years, or had sometimes made herself.
