"Temple Mayor," literally meaning "great temple," is the way archaeologists refer to the central religious building in Tenochtitlan. Although the Spanish demolished the final version of this temple, archaeologists have investigated what remains of this and of earlier versions buried when the temple was renovated and published detailed accounts. Pits dug below ancient ground surface when the temple was renovated contained deposits of stone statues, masks, pottery vessels, and animal bones. A single series of terraces supported two separate sanctuaries, one dedicated to Huitzilopochtli, the other to Tlaloc. Each sanctuary had its own stairway. At the base of the stairs were carved monuments, including a monumental disk commemorating the dismemberment of Coyolxauhqui.
