the shortest day

project developed at

by Alan McDonald

I call this song broadening leaf,
breath of cows,
water-crack-stone,
lily root.

On the longest day take a boat to the country
Make a river of stones, wade a path backwards

On the longest day lean slightly off-kilter
To feel your changing seasons

On the longest day smash glass if you have to
Throw out all items in boxes

Let one eye be blinded by greed
Let one eye be blinded by grief

On the longest day go into your garden,
find a willow-pattern bridge. At the top

light a candle. The shortest day's
a step, a spring, a spin away.
