Framework Knitters' Museum In 1996 I was asked to repair the roof at the Ruddington Framework Knitters' Museum (RFKM). I am a roofer, shop-fitter and builder. The atmosphere of the Victorian cottages and knitting workshops intrigued me and, as I now realise, beguiled me. I soon began repair work on the buildings, especially on the old Chapel, donated more and more time voluntarily and soon became a volunteer and Friend and fund-raiser for the museum. The museum manager, staff and trustees are so friendly, informed and helpful that I have learned to enjoy history which I hated at school. I have also become intrigued by the engineering of the knitting machines and the mental processes of William Lee, their inventor, which he translated into a very practical piece of equipment which has not changed fundamentally since the 18th century (I still can't remember dates!) I can see a very strong connection between these machines, the logical processes involved in their building and operation and modern computers - loop, no loop, connected loops, patterns; finished article. It is an intriguing turn of events that the RFK Museum is today being publicised on the Internet. It's a great place for children and adults alike. The cottage garden is one of the most relaxing places I have been in. I visit it for therapy as well as work. Tom Astill | ||
