Community

trAce is a busy 24-hour community for writers and readers across the world, and our online interactions are at the heart of it. We write, share our reading, critique each others' work, discuss our favourite books and talk all the time. If you have a good idea for a project you'll always find someone eager to participate. You can join web-based discussions; submit your writing for others to read and discuss; and take part in informal chats or scheduled events in the Chatroom or in a MOO-based virtual meeting room.

Joining trAce

You can join trAce by filling in the web form . After joining, you will be added to the trAce Member Mailing List, which will keep you up to date via email with news about trAce. Your homepage will be added to the Member Homepages section of the site, and your published books (if available on Amazon) can be added to the Members' Bookshop at your request (for more details, see http://trace.ntu.ac.uk/shop/member.cfm).

If you join trAce, you can leave at any time. To cancel your membership, simply send an email to trace@ntu.ac.uk with "Leave trAce" in the subject line, and your details will be removed from the database. Don't forget to quote your current email address and any previous ones under which you may have registered.

If you change your email address, please let us know by writing to trace@ntu.ac.uk.

WebBoard Forums

Our discussions mostly take place at the trAce WebBoard conferences. This system offers an excellent help page plus live chat and instant messaging. This is the place for general social chatter, to discuss writing issues and to workshop your writing. We hope you'll join us.

You are welcome to read the discussions as a guest without registering, but in order to post messages you must sign up (this is a separate process from joining trAce). To do this you are required to accept cookies and to give a name and password. (Privacy Policy ) To cancel your subscription, simply send an email to trace@ntu.ac.uk with "Leave WebBoard" and your username in the subject line, and we will delete your details.

We recommend you join both trAce and WebBoard to get the most out of the trAce community, but please note that by joining one you do not automatically become registered with the other.

Using WebBoard

The trAce WebBoard has an excellent Help section (click HELP on the black menubar). In addition, we have gathered a beginner's introduction and some frequently asked questions, as well as a sample of the kind of things we've talked about in the past. If you need any help with using the WebBoard discussion area or the trAce site, or for any other queries, you can ask our Volunteer Mentors.

More helpful information is available by clicking HELP on the WebBoard black menubar. /more

LinguaMOO

The trAce meeting room is hosted by LinguaMOO. You can connect directly to LinguaMOO via enCore Xpress (recent browsers only).

MOO Activities

It takes a little time to learn how to interact in a MOO, also called a text-based virtual community, but it's definitely worth the effort.

If you're a beginner to MOOing, try our Beginner's Tutorial. Or you can view the trAce meeting room on the Web.

Community principles

trAce exists to provide a professional and social online community for writers, readers and other artists. In support of that purpose, the trAce community has adopted three general governing principles:

  1. the Principle of Tolerance,
  2. the Principle of Artistic and Intellectual Freedom, and
  3. the Principle of Responsible Behaviour.

Online meetings and chats

Join us online every third Sunday for live discussion about writing issues, with invited speakers on topics of interest to writers. These programme meetings are logged, and the transcript is made available online at Online Meeting Logs

Meeting time: 21:00 London -- 16:00 New York -- 13:00 L.A. -- 06.00 (Mon) Sydney

Meetings take place in LinguaMOO. See our Events Diary  for the latest information.

To help you plan attendance at one of these chats, we recommend www.timeanddate.com.

A weekly chatspace is available every Sunday (for times see above) ) at the trAce Webboard to provide an opportunity for creative writers and readers to get together and discuss the art and craft of writing for all media. If you would like to host a chat one Sunday on a particular topic, please do get in touch (trace@ntu.ac.uk) to book a date.

A beginner's guide to IRC and Java chat is available. You can also access the #trace channel with any IRC client. Just point it to http://hum-webboard.ntu.ac.uk:7000 and join the #trace channel.
