This page provides a sample of each of the 216 web safe colours for you to see on-screen. Often the colours printed in books look quite different to a screen display.

Each colour has a hex code of 6 characters (see below). This is used to describe a colour within the HTML code behind a web page. Sometimes, however, it is necessary to convert these numbers to RGB codes. RGB stands for RED, GREEN, BLUE.

  

What is Web Safe

Only 216 colours are considered 'safe' for use on the web. These colours will be the viewed similarly regardless of what platform the reader is using.

To convert the hex codes below to a web safe colour in your palette use the key provided above. For example: #990033 converts to R=153, G=00, B=31. Another example: #CC3366 converts to R=204, G=51. B=102. This means that there are 2 ways of describing colour for use on the web - with a hex code and RGB number.
