Cone of a rabbit One may distinguish the typical elements of a cone cell. A typical feature of rabbit cones is the relatively short
outer segment. It's the small bent tip embedded between
other ± transparent outer segments. It is arising from
a long inner segment containing the machinery to generate
the molecules and the energy for photoreception. From the
cell body with the cell nucleus the axon is winding down
between (invisible) cell bodies of rod photoreceptorsa to
terminate in the knobby pedicle. There the synaptic contacts
(20-35) to interneurons are established...... Copyright © 1997

Photopigment Transmittance
Images By taking the ratio of retinal images taken before and
after bleaching away the photopigment, it is possible to
measure the optical density of the photopigment, determine
which type of pigment each cone contains, and construct a
photopigment transmittance image that shows what the retina
would look like if it could be viewed in white light without
bleaching away the photopigment..... Copyright © 1997
