frugivore (fruit-eater) - The kinkajou actually eats more fruit than meat, thus it is a seed disperser and therefore aids in new tree and plant growth in the rainforest. The kinkajou particularly likes figs, grapes, bananas, melons, apples, but does not like citrus fruit as much. The kinkajou will turn on its side or back, or even upside down to eat so as not to lose any of the fruit juice. It is a fruigivore-omnivore (will eat whatever is available) Since fruits are seasonal, they are not always readily available. The kinkajou will eat bark, leaves, tree-living frogs, swarming insects, honey, bird eggs and sometimes roosting birds. It is a pollinator - The kinkajou has a long flexible tongue which it uses to extract nectar from flowers. As the kinkajou feeds, pollen adheres to its face and is subsequently deposited on other plants as the animal moves from blossom to blossom in the jungle canopy. The kinkajou drinks water from the tree crotch pools and from leaves. It is arboreal (tree dwelling) - The kinkajou stays in the canopy (the uppermost spreading branchy layer of a forest) and seldom, if ever, comes down. It is the most arboreal of the New World mammals. The kinkajou has a prehensile (grasping) tail nearly as long as its body.
