Hypertext as Subversive

Can hypertext be subversive and offer resistance?

Hypertext is a technology, not a literary genre.

There is no one essentially correct--or essentially liberating--way to use hypertext.

Hypertext can be used to provide a sequence of jumps and textual or image juxtapositions that titillate and shock, but don't require extended attention beyond the current link.

Or hypertext can be used to compose vast reference works and collections of data, read for their parts and their efficient access to information.

Both of these are naturals for the wired world.

Or perhaps also hypertext could be composed in ways that demand more elaborated attention beyond the current item. Ways that encourage a new literacy.
