Difficult Texts

Hypertexts as loci of resistance to the forces of simplification would demand time and memory and attention and rereading. They could not be consumed in an eyeful.

Nor could areas of the text be forgotten, or merely repeated for skill and thrill, like the stages of an arcade game

Such texts would demand textual work that is not immediately productive and leisure that is not potato chip consumption. This resists the forces Kwinter talks about. This is also what universities have tried to foster.

So who will read such texts? And how does the university not let its own ideals get in the way of such reading?
