If hypertext catches on it will be as a technology rather than as a single genre with one set of conventions. There will be many new forms, just as there are still new forms being created in print technology, or handwriting. Now, in its infancy, hypertext can play against conventional expectations and forms of print writing. Eventually it will have to play against its own as well.
