The four world directions formed a circle moving from east, through north to west and south around a fixed center. The calendar of years cycled through these directions, each new year beginning on a different date: One Reed in the east, the red direction of sunrise and the New Fire; One Flint Knife in the north, the black direction of cold winds and of the dead; One House in the west, the white direction of women; and One Rabbit in the south, the blue direction.
