 | | In many ways it is the obverse of the city. As the details of event, character, and setting accumulate there is correspondingly less promise. That is, it becomes what we think, perhaps wrongly, of a suburb, an expanse of diminishing possibility. Pitted, dull surfaces of oxydized aluminum and dusty glass. Yet in actuality of course a city center is a well of detail. The simplicity of first stirrings is deceptive, the clarity of stone an illusion.
A bridal couple passes in a carriage, something of an anachronism. Someone told me about a couple who consummated their marriage in the midst of the cheering wedding party on the floor of a white stretch limousine. The maids and ushers shook bottles of cheap champagne and doused the two of them, soaking her crinolines and the back of his satin-trimmed tails.
