Alice's Shoe
If you look through a magnifying glass, you can get a fair idea
of what she carries in her hand, poised briefly on the metal staircase
pushed up against the body of United Air. Alice, behind her, carries
a small doll in trousers but her hat is elaborate, a kind of printed
turban riding a piece of felt. Alice's shoe, on the topmost step,
is black with a strap across the instep and show's behind Gertrude's
graceful skirt blown sideways by wind.
The photgrapher has one shot left on this, his
first assignment. He's heard she is a friend of Hemingway's and
is taking a chance. They look tickled pink.
