Vandalism has mushroomed to a new high as stone throwing thugs smashed windows in seven downtown businesses last night. Police responded to a disturbance call downtown in the five hundred block of 7th Street at approximately three AM. There they found windows shattered at DOBBS, FINE FEET SHOES, THE NEARLY NEW SHOPPE, CROWBAR FORD, PREATERING'S FINE MEN'S WEAR, MAULIN BEANS and THE MUD SHOP. Damage was estimated at over a thousand dollars. "It's obvious we have some sort of problem here," said Captain Norvell S. Pinge of the Mercurity City Police Force. "We recovered a sizable number of rocks at the scene and can only conclude there is a person or persons unknown who are perpetrating these assaults for reasons not disclosed." Police have also beefed up patrols in the area hoping to catch the vandals in the act.
