Step out onto the roof and look around at the lights in big apartment buildings on Powers Street. Hang and jump six feet into the alley. Head for the candy store on the corner of Lormer and Ainslie. From buildings on both sides of the street hear TV voices and real voices through open windows.
Summertime heat pushes people out onto stoops and makes them keep their windows half open, propped up by adjustable, sliding screens to keep bugs out, turns the whole borough of Brooklyn into a single apartment house where you can see and hear your neighbors. Stride along streets feeling different for being out at night, feeling older. Approach the candy store, take longer and longer steps
