Another fellow tells the story of an acquaintance of his, a writer, whose mother stood up to her armpits in the freezing water of a canal in the suburbs of Hamburg following the bombardment of the workers' quarter. She held the infant son as best she could above the surface while all around this sour ditch the flames roared. Occasional gusts of fire eventually singed away her eyebrows and scorched his damp swaddling the color of butterscotch. She stood there a day until the fires died down and then crawled out and tried to find somewhere for them to stay, something to eat, a rag to change him into.
